Start with Art
March 6 – April 17, 2021
Start with Art is a unique exhibition that focuses on encouraging young people to appreciate, collect, and curate their own art collection – with a special price list just for kids 16 and younger!
For this 16th annual exhibition we’ve assembled a fantastic group of established artists who work in a variety of media and artwork in the gallery is hung at “kids-eye-view,” making Start with Art truly kid-centric. Through our exhibition publication, exhibiting artists also offer advice for budding artists and frequently spark the idea in kids that one day their work could be shown in a gallery, too.
Artists: Andrea Alcaraz, Rachael Ashe, Ali T. Bruce, Flavia Chan, June Corstorphine, Breanna Deis, Bev Ellis, Lynne Taylor Fahnestalk, Hiller Goodspeed, Clara Leung, Dawn Lo, Tara Pawson, Mona Ungar, and Jamie Zirk
If you or a young collector in your family made a purchase during Start with Art, artwork will be available for pickup beginning April 24.
Shh… It’s a Secret!
The secret room will be on display until April 17, 2021
FREE, but donations greatly appreciated
Did you find the secret room in the gallery?
There is a secret room every year during Start with Art, and usually young people find it before grown ups! This secret room is a space for young people to get creative and this year, the room is a little bit different. Ask a staff member for a super-secret take-home art project and make your mark on the gallery!
We’ll give you something to get started. Then, create a work of art at home, bring it back to the gallery, and we’ll display it in Start with Art’s secret room until April 17, 2021!
Not sure what to draw? Make something that represents YOU! It could be a self-portrait, your favourite food, a place, an object, or anything that means something special to you.
Kids’ Kits!
SOLD OUT!
We’ve put together free take-home art projects, so kids don’t have to leave empty handed when they visit Start with Art! These kits are filled with upcycled, unique materials to help inspire creative projects at home. Each kit contains a colourful sturdy surface to work on, to make sure it can handle any idea a young artist may have!
You’ll need a few materials from home – like glue, scissors, and perhaps some paint – but try to allow the materials in the kit to inspire you! If a material is fuzzy, or shiny, or rough, what kind of images and emotions do those textures make you think of?
Parents can send a photo to info(at)seymourartgallery.com if you would like to share finished projects. Natural light always helps to take great photos and we would love to see the artwork young artists are making!
